Well hi everyone Steve Patterson herefrom photoshop essentials comm in thisvideo I'll show you how to place animage into a shape with Photoshop aswe'll see Photoshop makes it easy toplace any image into any type of shapefrom a basic rectangle or circle to afancy custom shape for this video we'lluse one of photoshop's custom shapes butonce you've learned the steps you canstart placing images into any shape youlikeI'll be using Photoshop CC buteverything we'll be doing is alsocompatible with Photoshop cs6 if you'rewatching this video on our websiteyou'll also find the complete textversion of this tutorial so you canwatch the video or read through thesteps thanks for joining me and let'sget started well let's start by creatinga new Photoshop document go up to thefile menu in the menu bar along the topof the screen and choose newthis opens the new document dialog boxif you're using Photoshop CC you'll seethe newly redesigned version of thedialog box and if you're using Photoshopcs6 you'll see the older traditionalversion we'll look at the Photoshop CCversion here but you'll find the sameoptions for creating a new customdocument in cs6 in Photoshop CC theoptions for customizing the document arefound in the preset details panel alongthe right of the dialog box for thistutorial let's create a square-shapeddocument set the width and height to2,000 pixelswe'll set the resolution to 72 pixelsper inchand the background contents too white inPhotoshop CC click create to create thenew document in Photoshop cs6 click OKand here we see the new white filleddocument on the screen as I mentionedearlier you can use any type of shapefor this effect for this tutorial I'lluse one of photo shops built in customshapes select the custom shape tool fromthe toolbar by default the custom shapetool is nested behind the rectangle toolto select it right-click on a Windows PCor control click on a Mac on therectangle toolthen choose the custom shape tool fromthe menu there's three types of shapesthat we can draw in Photoshop we candraw vector shapes paths or pixel basedshapes vector shapes are the type youfind in drawing programs like AdobeIllustrator and that's the type we'lluse here because they let us draw theshape at any size we need while keepingthe edges nice and sharp to draw avector shape make sure the tool modeoption in the options bar is set toshape to let us see our shape againstthe white background we'll set the fillcolor of the shape to black you'll findthe fill color swatch in the options bardirectly beside the tool mode option bydefault it should already be set toblack next let's choose a shapePhotoshop includes lots of ready-madecustom shapes for us to choose from butagain by default only a handful of themare loaded into the program to find therest we need to load them in ourselvesif we look at the shape thumbnail in theoptions bar we see the shape that'scurrently selected in my case it's anarrow which isn't the shape I want touse to choose a different oneclick on the thumbnailthis opens the custom-shape picker withthumbnails.
