Hey there's Brooks here from documents not calm and today we're going to be talking about password protecting PDFs on the Mac ok so I have a PDF open and I'm opening it in preview which is the application on the Mac that will let you open images and documents and all sorts of things so what we want to do is we want to make this lock so that no one else can open it unless they have the password so there's a bunch of different ways in application to do that but I'm going to do it using the free preview that's built-in so what we're going to do is we're going to go up to file and print and instead of printing it we're going to go down here to where it says PDF and we're going to click that and we're going to choose save as PDF so we're going to resave it as another PDF so the normal thing comes up you know asking you where you want to save it but there's this box here which you may not have noticed before called security options so before we save the file I'm going to click that and you can see here we've got the option to set a password to open the document you can even you can even set the password to for just printing or you can make it so that you need a password in order to copy text and other stuff like that we're not going to get fancy we'll just require a password to open the document so I'll just give it a password here and I'll hit OK and then we'll just call this say locked just for the sake of argument and I'll save it to my desktop so I'll close this one and you can see here now that this PDF was the original PDF and now there's this new PDF with a lock icon on it and that's the one we just created so even using the thumbnail view you can't see what's in the PDF and when I try and double click it to open it I get this big red box saying the PDF is password protected so if I type anything in it says invalid password if I tape the real password it lets me in so that's really a quick demo on how to set a password in preview on the Mac using free tools for more paperless tips head on over to documents Netcom thanks.
